It’ been a busy summer and here are a few photos of what I have been working on.
12″ x 12″ shell mosaics on canvas –
I have a question for you. What is best to use for the backing for a valentine? I have a back loading box. I’ve seen some that have a fabric behind them. Are they ever done on the wooden backing piece?
My suggestion is to work on an octagon cut from acid free illustration board. Remove the back of your case. Cut and glue an acid free illustration board (which is like matte board and can be found at a framing shop like Hobby Lobby) to fit the case’s wood back. It should be cut a little smaller so that the back still fits in the case. Then you can work on a surface that takes glue well. By using this method stains from the case won’t bleed over time into your shell design. If using fabric, practice first. Maybe add a layer of cotton batting under the fabric to make a puffy effect. Careful with glue as it will mark the fabric easily if it oozes outside of the shell design. These are just a few hints I use. Every artist has different thoughts. We all learn by trial and error.
